Where to Begin? How about in Zanzibar?!

There are so many stories - and so many pictures - and so many memories to share from our month in Africa.  But I don't quite know where to begin!  Maybe it has something to do with recovering jet lag and a tired brain :)  If you have suggestions about how I should approach this whole posting topic, please feel free to share.

For today, I'm going to share 10 random thoughts about Zanzibar!  And all pictures are courtesy of Bob - who had a great time using his new Panasonic 12X Zoom camera on this vacation :))

1.  This is how nutmeg grows - a seed inside a shell, wrapped in a little red net, tucked away inside a plum-like fruit.

2.  We stayed at the Karifuu Beach Resort and our room was this little thatched roof bungalow.

3.  Miles of sandy beach were right along the resort on the east side of the island.

4.  The sky was constantly changing with clouds rolling in and out.  It made for great photo ops!

5.  One night we had a Maasai dinner and they had displays of jewellery and handicrafts for sale before the show.  (Night photography is always a challenge.)

6.  Down the beach a bit, this group of kids was busy carrying buckets and bags of sand up to a house.   I think they were making bricks or building something and 2 families were working together.  The little girls were carrying the buckets on their heads, which always fascinates me!

7.  Coral forms the basis of this island and along the beach were really cool coral cliffs.   Later during the day, the tide would be washing up right underneath here.

8.  Looking out from our room, you could see the main pool area with the dining area on the right hand side, in the thatch roofed hut.

9.  Rock Restaurant - all it needs is a new roof  - maybe another month or two, according to one of the locals! - and it will be ready for guests.  Personally, I think it needs more than that but I guess we won't be there for the grand opening.

10.   Bob and Clarence arrived here on Sunday and then Sandra and I flew in on Monday.  The guys schemed with the tour guide and the driver and hid while we were picked up at the airport.  The guide told us it was an hour to our resort and we'd have to share the space with another couple that they were picking up.  So we thought the guys didn't come to meet us because of the hour drive and we're prepared to ride with other people, when suddenly we stopped along the road and Bob and Clarence appeared!  It was a big surprise and they were quite proud of themselves for surprising us in such a big way!  And we were very happy to see them again!!

  2. Great start! The quality of pictures turned out great with your new little camera.
What did you think of Zanzibar? Did you go much touring there? It fasinates me because I wrote a paper on the country and slave trade once in university. It looks very tropical and relaxing.
Great surprise by the guys! A nice treat after being apart for so long.
