Samburu Afternoon Game Drive

Later that day we went back out, across the river, to see what we could see!!  And oh, what we did see!!
More giraffes were out and about - -

including this very tall guy -

who had to bend down to eat leaves from this tree.

And a little further on, a family was having snacks.

This was probably one of the smoothest roads we were ever on during the safari!!  The soil was very red here and you can tell how dusty it was by how much red dust the shrubs on the left side are wearing.

While we were wandering around, Chris got a text message (yes - it's even in Kenya, out in the parks!) from a colleague telling him that 2 lions were resting nearby so off we went!

These were the only 2 lionesses that we ever saw up off the ground!  This broken tree stump provided a perfect sunning spot for them.

The top one did quite a lot of posing while the bottom one was obviously exhausted!

By this time the sun was waning and it provided beautiful golden light, which made for great pictures.

Everyone in the reserve came to see and get in on the photographic action!!

Later we saw some oryx grazing -

and a female eland.

And just as we were about to head back to the lodge, Chris got another message (the drivers have an incredible network so every visitor gets to see as many animals as possible) that a cheetah had made a kill and was having supper.  We hurried over to marvel again - and then had to rush to get home before the gates closed at 6:30 p.m..  The parks and reserves have very strict rules and there was no way we wanted Chris to get a fine either!  We made it back with about 5 minutes to spare!

  1. You had an awesome day!! I'm just so amazed at how many animals you saw. The lionesses are so neat, just lounging in the tree. How big are they? Was this your favourite part of the trip?
