Every guide book recommends the Carnivore restaurant, Nairobi's most famous, as a must do experience - so we had lunch there after visiting the elephant orphanage.
The menu included all sorts of meat choices but there were vegetarian choices too - yeah, Mel! In the past they've served wild meats like giraffe and crocodile but that's been changed. On this day, ostrich meat balls were the most unusual choice we tried.
The meat is grilled on long skewers stacked over charcoal in this central grilling area.
Waiters bring the long skewers to your table and carve off as much as you'd like to eat. Plates are cast iron and very hot so the meat sizzles right on your platter. Bob left his fork on the edge of his plate and then burnt his fingers and lips when he went to use it again! When you "surrender" - put the little white flag on your table down - the waiters stop coming.
The choices of fancy drinks were displayed on this tree.
Bob tried the house special, a dawa (the Swahili word for medicine) - vodka, honey and lime prepared right at the table.
We all chose apple pie with ice cream for dessert! It wasn't quite as good as my Mom's but pretty authentic anyway :)

looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteSo that's what you have been up to! Looking forward to more photos and stories about your adventure! We arrived home safely last night after our 2 week trip/cruise. Now I'm trying to edit photos and catch up the laundry.
ReplyDeleteWhat a funky restaurant. Did it smell like meat inside from all the grilling? How were the meatballs?
ReplyDeleteA little apple pie for your Thanksgiving treat in Kenya?!
