As we left Nairobi and headed out to begin our safari, there was a lot to absorb along the road. In and around the city, the roads were paved and there were tons of these van-taxis racing around. Chris said that they were licensed to carry 14 people - recently down-sized from the previous 18 passengers! They were usually jam packed and drove like madmen. He said many of them were improperly licensed and they would be routinely stopped by the police, which we saw often.
It took Bob a few tries but he eventually managed to get some pictures of them through the side window of our vehicle.
And then there were the cows along the road! Herded by Maasai men and boys, they were on the move wherever we went and Chris was required to drive carefully to avoid collisions. (I think that's Iris' hand - looks like she's hanging on for dear life!)
Bicycles are used everywhere - most often to haul things. You'll see more of these as the trip goes on!
Agriculture is not mechanized here and donkeys pulling all kinds of loads were common. Sometimes men would pull a cart like this too.
We drove nearly 4000 kilometres on this trip and we always had lots to see!

Every country you've been to has such neat little tidbits to capture and remember. Did you get in one of those taxis? Looks like the bus from Katowice to Krakow. ;)
ReplyDeleteIt must have been so neat to always see new stuff out the windows! Great photos and memories!
